Hello all - I know I have have been MIA for awhile - the reason being I am in a new position this year teaching Grade 3/4! It has been a nice change but as you know, lots of work. However, I jumped at the opportunity to teach Religion to older grades. As a result, I have my first unit complete for Grade 3 and Grade 4!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Religion-Lesson-Unit-1-Learning-the-Catholic-Faith-Grade-3-and-Grade-4-5181865" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1024" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VbjwKnDUnck/XicQcTs5WtI/AAAAAAAAUwU/ikoQcdtxtbsXgaY5WXhJDlgWv48IGnIbwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Religion%2B3.4.2%2BCover.001.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My favourite lessons include one on taking a peek at different religions and comparing them to the Catholic faith - so many parallels, looking at dignity for all and creating a huge class banner as we study how we can be more inclusive and accepting as human beings, as well as an examination of conscience and a reflection on how we love ourselves, as well as others.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My students LOVED the virtue bookmark - lol - I see them everywhere - I think it has to do with the excess ribbon I let them use to decorate - haha. The unit also includes a lot more!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Recently, my journey exploring the new B.C. Curriculum has led me to the Grade 1 math curriculum. The curriculum content objective, ways to make 10, lists benchmarks of 10 and 20 as a required concept to understand. A quick perusal of google produced very little for teaching about benchmarks to six and seven year olds. I did however find some good places to start!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZhMH3Om_nZI/XHMS-2HzH_I/AAAAAAAAREg/Gghxm6TS-A8yi5g-b1bDcbH_WQ78HK-iACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1655.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZhMH3Om_nZI/XHMS-2HzH_I/AAAAAAAAREg/Gghxm6TS-A8yi5g-b1bDcbH_WQ78HK-iACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_1655.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first was a teaching blog, <i>What I Have Learned</i>, by teacher Jessica Boschen. Jessica does a great job <a href="https://www.whatihavelearnedteaching.com/strategies-that-develop-10-as-a-benchmark-number/" target="_blank">explaining strategies that develop 10 as a benchmark number</a>. While the strategies were wonderful, I knew my students were not there yet. I needed something a little simpler. Then I found a great video by <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 16px;">Bethany McClurkan called <i>10 Benchmark on a Numberline</i>:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/MWZjWwbwwWc/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MWZjWwbwwWc?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After watching this, I thought I knew what I wanted to teach my students. I wrote my lesson plan, delivered it to my students and they were LOST!! I mean LOST. They clearly were not ready for this level of benchmark complexity. A few maybe understood but the majority were lost and asking when it was lunch time - haha. I scrapped that lesson quickly.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I thought to myself, I need to simplify this. I know what the objective is eventually: they need to add and subtract using the benchmarks. First, what do I want my students to be able to do? 1) I want them to be able to identify the benchmarks of 10 and 20 and to be able to label them on a number line. So I told my students we were going to learn some more about benchmarks. I gave them the definition: "A benchmark is a number that is used all the time in math. It is common and easy to deal with. You can use it to solve math equations." I asked them if they could guess what numbers I was talking about. The first number they said was '0'. I thought to myself, of course 0 is a benchmark, so we labeled it on a large number line I posted on the SmartBoard. Eventually, my students named 10 and 20. Then, we labeled 5 and 15, because, why not - they are important, too. I told my students that these numbers were all important benchmarks.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W1AcNBnhv3I/XHMfHzQlTEI/AAAAAAAARE0/yImCl7014P4XpjLW-4YYeWMdGc275yvygCLcBGAs/s1600/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.036.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W1AcNBnhv3I/XHMfHzQlTEI/AAAAAAAARE0/yImCl7014P4XpjLW-4YYeWMdGc275yvygCLcBGAs/s320/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.036.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Next, I handed out a blank number line without increments. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Together we labeled 0 at the beginning of the line on the left. Then, we labeled 20 on the right. Next, I demonstrated how to fold my numberline in half like a hamburger to label 10, because we know that 10 is half of 20. Then, we folded 0 to meet 10 and thus, labeled 5. Finally, we folded 20 to meet 10 and labeled 15. In my excitement, I said, "OK, let's now label the rest of the number line now that we have the benchmarks!" DISASTER! Well, not a complete disaster but somehow in all of my years of experience, I forgot 6 and 7 year olds' fine motor and spatial abilities are not fully developed yet. I stopped them halfway through and had them crumple the number line up for the recycle bin - they LOVED that - haha.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The next day, I reviewed the benchmarks with my students on a large number line, this time with increments, on the SmartBoard. Then, I had students come up and label the numbers in between the benchmarks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZhMH3Om_nZI/XHMS-2HzH_I/AAAAAAAAREg/Gghxm6TS-A8yi5g-b1bDcbH_WQ78HK-iACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1655.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZhMH3Om_nZI/XHMS-2HzH_I/AAAAAAAAREg/Gghxm6TS-A8yi5g-b1bDcbH_WQ78HK-iACEwYBhgL/s400/IMG_1655.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As a game, I gave my students a number line with increments, the benchmarks of 0, 10 and 20, and squares to write the numbers between the benchmarks. </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WZbzt3cePhI/XHMfle59wEI/AAAAAAAARE8/khuHlqypTCwkVSR11X7qLaQxLsruPUNKgCLcBGAs/s1600/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.040.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WZbzt3cePhI/XHMfle59wEI/AAAAAAAARE8/khuHlqypTCwkVSR11X7qLaQxLsruPUNKgCLcBGAs/s320/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.040.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In partners, they were to take turns choosing a number on the numberline and having their partner try to guess that number. If the partner guessed the correct number they could write it on their number line. The partner at the end of the lesson with the most numbers written on their timeline was the winner. They LOVED this! As a less time-consuming, but still valuable version, I encouraged groups to give clues to their partner. For example, one might say, "I am thinking of a number between the benchmarks of 5 and 10," or "I am thinking of a number that is less than the 20 benchmark and more than the 15 benchmark." As a result, my students were solidifying their ability to identify the benchmarks, where they were located on the numberline and, Objective #2: to know where the other numbers were located, and how they were positioned on the numberline, in relation to the benchmarks. This game took them some time and no one completely finished, so I made a few other options that had some of the numbers filled in - in this way we could work up to filling in the entire number line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vqSwsjMnv4/XHMhSUH2kxI/AAAAAAAARFM/O8VXI5blSRU_7-oyzIV1jxCnYxBCa3MQQCLcBGAs/s1600/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.038.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vqSwsjMnv4/XHMhSUH2kxI/AAAAAAAARFM/O8VXI5blSRU_7-oyzIV1jxCnYxBCa3MQQCLcBGAs/s320/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.038.jpeg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L97aagle-CY/XHMhSiClzZI/AAAAAAAARFQ/muLr-Q31e0YeiJfaWDZDQevCfrJzEdttwCLcBGAs/s1600/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.039.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; display: inline !important; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L97aagle-CY/XHMhSiClzZI/AAAAAAAARFQ/muLr-Q31e0YeiJfaWDZDQevCfrJzEdttwCLcBGAs/s320/Ways%2Bto%2BMake%2B10.039.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You may even want to give the option to choose one of the three number lines when playing the game. I recently attended a Shelley Moore workshop. These could easily be turned into a Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 number line option. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a teacher in the midst of my fourteenth year of teaching, I have noticed that transitioning from one lesson to another in the primary classroom can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare (haha understatement of the year). It can give students that bit of time to socialize, sure, but it can also be a moment when conflict and dysregulation can occur, stealing their precious focus and using up several minutes of learning time. Now, I am all for brain breaks (in our class, we <a href="https://www.gonoodle.com/" target="_blank">GoNoodle</a> with the best of them!) and stopping the lesson and talking about what went wrong and discussing ways to problem solve (Hello my good friend <a href="https://www.loveandlogic.com/pdfs/guiding-children-to-solve-their-own-problems.pdf" target="_blank">Love and Logic</a>đź’ś), don't get me wrong. However, sometimes some students are just not ready to process the ins and outs of how or why they are feeling the way they are. In due time and with the right supports, we will get there. However, the rest of the class is geared up and ready to learn! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
ENTER....focused, concept centred transitions!! If you are going from table to carpet or carpet to table, use a concept centred transition! If students are walking in the hallway or going to get their snacks use these moments as opportunities to review concepts and practice skills learned in class. They can be used for all subjects and they are great for the <a href="http://www.institute4learning.com/resources/articles/multiple-intelligences/" target="_blank">kinesthetic</a> learners in your group!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to focus on <span style="color: blue;">numeracy</span> for this blog post, but there are many ways to incorporate concepts from all the subject areas!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students start, standing at their table or desk (they must be standing behind their chair to start - no cheating). This can take a few weeks of observing and practicing to eliminate cheating, as well as to practice moving and speaking as a team. With a challenging class I found I had to be quite observant and sticky with the rules. This year, I am lucky to be a little bit freer and we joke around a lot - they know not to take things too far.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When students reach the carpet, they stand in their spot and continue participating until all students have reached the carpet. Then, we all sit down together as a class.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below are a few examples!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Numeracy Vocabulary Syllables: Teacher says one numeracy vocabulary word at a time and students takes steps for each syllable in each word. Example: Teacher - "Equation" Students: "E- (one step) qua- (one step) -tion (one step)".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting forwards by 1's: Students start at "0" on an imaginary number line. With each step, they say a number. You can have them repeat after you, clap or tap as they say each number. You may have they start at "4" instead of "0" - there are many variations.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting backwards by 1's: Students start at "any number" on an imaginary number line. With each step, they say a number. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting by 2's: Students hop on two feet as they say each number.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting by 5's: Students assume crawling "baby style" position, and count "5" for each hand movement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting on: Teacher says any number and students count on two numbers. Example: Teacher says "5" and students say "6, 7" while taking a step for each number.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Counting back: Teacher says any number and students count back two numbers. Example: Teacher says "8" and students say "7, 6" while taking a step for each number.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Number Partners (bonds) of 10: Teacher says a number and students say its number partner and then take that number of steps. Example: Teacher says "6" and students say "4 - 1, 2, 3, 4".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Doubles: Teachers says a double and students say its sum and then take that number of steps. Teacher says "2+2" and students say "4 - 1, 2, 3, 4".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ok - so I have putting a lot of thought into <b>inquiry</b> and how to make it a part of my classroom. I know a lot of teachers are panicking about how to do all this on an already tight schedule.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As a group, teachers are already such <b>amazing</b> professionals and we have already created some amazing units. <span style="font-size: large;">Don't reinvent the wheel! </span> <i>Take what you already have and add a little inquiry!!! </i> Below are some steps I used to make-over my Bear Unit to an Inquiry-Based Bear unit. Let me know what you think! <u>NOTE: You must follow this blog in order to post a comment.</u></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is so cool to see inquiry enriching your lessons and making them more relevant to students. I can see how excited they get when they become involved in their learning! Already, the topic of survival is something they can understand!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Today I am attending a FISA conference. Darren Spyksma is speaking about <a href="https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum" target="_blank">BC's new curriculum</a> and the <a href="https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/competencies" target="_blank">core competencies</a>. The following notes are based on his presentation.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
As a human, you will be <span style="color: red; font-size: large;">developing</span> your core competencies throughout your <span style="color: #20124d; font-size: large;">entire life</span>. They <u>do not</u> need be assigned a <i>grade</i> or a <i>number</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As educators, we must <span style="background-color: white;"><b>use</b></span> the Content as a <span style="background-color: orange;">vehicle</span> to practice the core competencies, RATHER than focus on the two areas separately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hUUErVNn6jk/WCDEPOUKLMI/AAAAAAAAHOM/nBjNxHW8kRkb7-CkFpfBU-ntaL0DRuiTwCLcB/s1600/Slide22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hUUErVNn6jk/WCDEPOUKLMI/AAAAAAAAHOM/nBjNxHW8kRkb7-CkFpfBU-ntaL0DRuiTwCLcB/s640/Slide22.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Below are some key points for BC teachers:</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>The KEY to core competency acquirement is REFLECTION.</li>
<li>Do NOT focus on all core competencies at once.</li>
<li>What core competency do your students need to develop?</li>
<li>Begin your unit by defining the chosen core competency of focus.</li>
<li>Include REFLECTION at the end of every activity based on the chosen core competency of focus.</li>
</ol>
</h3>
<h3>
</h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Following these five ideas, you as an educator will be fulfilling the requirements of the new curriculum.</i></div>
</span><br />
<div>
<br />
QUICK EASY Reflection Activity: One new take on Think, Pair, Share is the Back to Back Sharing activity that would be a great, easy reflection activity.<br />
STEPS:<br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Have students find a partner and stand back to back.</li>
<li>Ask a question that encourages reflection based on core competency development.</li>
<li>Example: How well did you communicate during that last activity on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 being Working on it!, 2 being Good! and 3 being WOW! Provide an explanation as to why using a "because" in your answer. Allow students 30 seconds to think before they answer.</li>
<li>After 30 seconds, direct students to turn and share their answers with their partner.</li>
<li>Repeat this activity at least three times to encourage social responsibility. At first, you tend to choose a partner you are comfortable with. Eventually, you will need to branch out as you are required to find a different partner.</li>
</ol>
<div>
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Core-Competencies-Reflection-Pages-for-Primary-2867069" target="_blank">Here</a> is a little freebie to extend your reflection process with your students!</div>
<div>

Also, Suzanne Hoffman presented on ideas for assessment:<br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Passion Afternoon: Every teacher chooses a passion to study with the whole class for the afternoon.</li>
<li>Exit Tickets: Formative assessment! Here are some great Exit Ticket packets from teacherspayteachers.com</li>
<li>No Hands Up Class Lesson: Don't let your students who don't know off the hook! As a teacher, you may choose any student to answer. Students with anxiety are well known by the teacher so teachers would focus on their exit ticket instead. You could also have a secret signal for that child to indicate that they are willing to share.</li>
</ol>
<a href="https://plickers.com/">https://plickers.com/</a> This app allows teachers to see student answers to a question as an evaluation tool without allowing other students to influence the decisions of others, so students<br />
don't feel self-conscious. The cards are free and just need to be printed.<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Each student receives a different plicker.</li>
<li>The teacher asks a question with an A, B, C or D answer.</li>
<li>Students choose an answer and hold up their card.</li>
<li>The teacher scans the room with their camera on their phone which is connected to the app.</li>
<li>The camera collects the data, reports to the app and provides data for the teacher.</li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So as I have been dabbling in B.C.'s new curriculum I have also been fine tuning my inquiry-based learning skills. It seems SO complicated at first!! I have simplified it now that I have done it a couple of times. Now it is definitely more manageable for me and hopefully for you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Community-Inquiry-Inquiry-Based-Learning-2391987" target="_blank"><img alt="BC's New Curriculum" border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DUwqAJSvZCU/V5Azflq0ZaI/AAAAAAAAFEQ/mrvACm0n6Nc9gD9wO-Jsy1v9ljEurtC1gCLcB/s640/My%2BCommunity%2BInquiry%2BPin.001.jpg" title="Community Inquiry" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think one of the key points is #2 Understand. What does the question mean? It is important for the teacher to break down the question and define each term and unknown word. So I decided I needed to completely revamp <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Community-Inquiry-Inquiry-Based-Learning-2391987" target="_blank">My Community Inquiry Unit</a> and am I sure glad I did!! Excited for this coming school year to use it for the second time!!! Bring on the new curriculum!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Community-Inquiry-Inquiry-Based-Learning-2391987" target="_blank"><img alt="BC's new curriculum" border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bdYV2LLPPUA/V5Azfi9CXgI/AAAAAAAAFEU/SnuC_qyIYPgfS9G6-f-kEKTkdvFqQL5oQCLcB/s640/My%2BCommunity%2BInquiry%2BPin.002.jpg" title="Inquiry My Community Social studies" width="426" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So how is your relationship with BC's new curriculum? I'd love to hear how it is going!!</div>

Hi all - so I have a student teacher...and she is amazing!! As a result I have time...so I have been making the most of my time. First, I did my Long Range Plans:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7zOCQ0UOUaU/VraKLzWTh9I/AAAAAAAAE-Q/TQ4A0tqZdNU/s1600/Grade%2B1%2BLong%2BRange%2BPlans.007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Grade 1" border="0" height="474" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7zOCQ0UOUaU/VraKLzWTh9I/AAAAAAAAE-Q/TQ4A0tqZdNU/s640/Grade%2B1%2BLong%2BRange%2BPlans.007.jpg" title="Social Studies New BC curriculum" width="640" /></a></div>
Comments? What do you think? I was planning to include the Core Competencies when I wrote lesson plans. Also - I would just print what they provided on the <a href="https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/social-studies/1" target="_blank">BC Curriculum website</a> in PDF format as the first page. These two pages would follow for Social Studies.<br />
<br />
Next, I did an <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Community-Inquiry-Inquiry-Based-Learning-2391987" target="_blank">Inquiry Unit for Social Studies</a> to match. It covers most of the new content:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Community-Inquiry-Inquiry-Based-Learning-2391987" target="_blank"><img alt="grade 1" border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IjtMFRDDaoA/VraLPl-sOII/AAAAAAAAE-Y/mAgNhrhVWCo/s400/My%2BCommunity%2B%257BAn%2BInquiry%2BBased%2BUnit%257D.001.jpg" title="My Community Inquiry New BC curriculum" width="306" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Rae1BHWFX6U/VraLajU2VeI/AAAAAAAAE-g/H_gM2Mgyfos/s1600/My%2BCommunity%2B%257BAn%2BInquiry%2BBased%2BUnit%257D.038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Rae1BHWFX6U/VraLajU2VeI/AAAAAAAAE-g/H_gM2Mgyfos/s400/My%2BCommunity%2B%257BAn%2BInquiry%2BBased%2BUnit%257D.038.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C7MJLh53TLI/VraLkkw-P1I/AAAAAAAAE-k/d1Bhy9wI5yY/s1600/My%2BCommunity%2B%257BAn%2BInquiry%2BBased%2BUnit%257D.063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C7MJLh53TLI/VraLkkw-P1I/AAAAAAAAE-k/d1Bhy9wI5yY/s400/My%2BCommunity%2B%257BAn%2BInquiry%2BBased%2BUnit%257D.063.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
This unit has not been tried in the classroom so I am looking for the first 5 people who write a comment on this post with their e-mail to demo parts of it or all of it with their class and provide feedback. I plan on doing the same. Anyone interested? My plan is to do a small Matter Unit next. Wish me luck! My student teacher leaves after the first week of March and my time will be up!!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">So
as I dive into my assessment course for my Master's program I am reading
articles about testing and examination. There is lots of debate about
whether or not we should be testing or examining our students. Lots of
students do not perform well on tests. How does continued failure support
their learning? A few thoughts occurred to me while I was reading:
Perhaps we are using exams and tests in the wrong way? Here are 10
reasons and ways to reinvent the exam or test in your classroom.</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Exams
are useful for some students so why ditch them because some students do not
perform well?</span></span></h4>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">This
sounds extremely controversial to me but I am willing to put this thought out
into the digital universe. Well-designed, appropriate exams worked well for
me and approximately 80% of the people in my high school graduating
class. Why ditch the exam when it works well for most?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">We
need to look at how we administer exams.</span></span></h4>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">
<!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">There.
I said it. Let's take the very valid form of assessment and
reinvent it for every learner. Let's turn test taking and exam writing on
its head.</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Make
sure each exam and test is well-designed tool in your assessment toolkit.
Be sure to include a variety of questions that cover <a href="https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/"><span style="color: #345a8a; text-decoration: none;">Bloom's Taxonomy</span></a>.</span></span></h4>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">I
attended high school during the 90's. When I reflect on how my teachers
assessed my learning I was impressed with the variety of assessment tools they
used. Each assessment was appropriately designed to help provide my
teachers with information about my learning. In social studies we learned
about different cultures; we compared and contrasted them to our own. We
created brochures and wrote essays. In Language Arts whenever we
completed a novel study, read a play, or studied an essay/poem we would
analyze, apply, understand and evaluate through discussion and essays.
Occasionally we had to memorize appropriate literary terms and were tested on
these, as it was applicable to our study of the literature. Sometimes, we
were evaluated through test format if it was deemed appropriate. In
mathematics we focused on the rote skill. We had to take procedures and
apply them to different problems with differing variables on a continuous
basis. Often we were solving word problems and practicing our application
skills. In science, we focused on inquiry and experimentation to back up
ideas and concepts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Overall, the way my
teachers chose to evaluate my performance matched with what we were learning.
Tests and exams were one important facet in a box of assessment tools.</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Every
exam/test should be reviewed by students so they can see their mistakes and
continue their learning.</span></span></h4>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">On
her blog, <i><a href="http://www.brilliant-insane.com/2015/06/10-things-you-dont-know-about-formative-assessment.html"><span style="color: blue;">Brilliant or Insane: Education on the Edge</span></a></i>,
Angela Stockman writes, “<span style="background: white; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0cm; padding: 0cm;">The only summative assessment
that benefits learners is one that also serves as a formative assessment”
(para. 4). When I read this statement I reflected on my own experience
with takings tests as a student and giving tests as a teacher. I
considered it an extremely important learning experience when I was handed back
the test and as a class we went over the answers; the summative became
formative and I was able to progress into the next assignment with a better
understanding of how I should proceed.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="background: white; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0cm; padding: 0cm;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Every
teacher must be involved in the creation of State/Provincial Testing.</span></span></h4>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">Back
when I was a student in the good old '90s, when we took a test, sometimes we
were able to go over the test to see where we went wrong. Thus, the
test morphed from summative assessment to formative. The only time
that this did not apply was when we took the Provincial exam. First,
my teachers did not create the exams. I could sense their frustration and
helplessness in this reality. However, they were aware of the format of
the exam so they could do their best to provide assignments and instruction
based on what would best help us to succeed on the exam. Still, they
had little control over what questions would be asked and if they would be a
fair assessment of knowledge. Unless every teacher has a part in
creating a provincial exam/standardized test the exam cannot possibly be
fair. <b>Teachers need to be involved in creating Provincial exams/ Standardized
tests to help plan curriculum.</b> Second, our exams were never
returned to us; we were never able to see where we went wrong on the exam after
they were marked to help us continue our learning.</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Tests
and exams should be equally as important to teachers as they are to students.</span></span></h4>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-outline-level: 4;">
<span style="background: white; color: #333333; font-family: "times new roman";">When I administer an exam to my grade one
students, I always tell them that one purpose of the exam is to see as a
teacher what I need to reteach and help them with – the exam is for me as well
as for them to evaluate their own learning. Students need to be evaluated
on more than just the exam. It can be a tool but not the only form of assessment.</span><br />
<span style="background: white; color: #333333; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Students
should write and submit reflections on mistakes and learning once exams are
returned.</span></span></h4>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">
<!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">In his article <a href="http://m.nzherald.co.nz/education/news/article.cfm?c_id=35&objectid=11518884"><span style="color: blue;">Assessment as learning</span></a>, Steve Maharey writes, “</span><span style="background: white; color: #333333; font-family: "times new roman";">Relying on
testing and exams too heavily leads to students being compared with one another
rather than finding out where they are weak and where they are strong so their
performance can be constantly improved” (para. 13). Perhaps we do not
need to do away with exams but evaluate how they are delivered. I would
suggest that exams not only be followed with a review of correct answers but
also supplemented with a teacher marked student reflection on additional
learning achieved from reviewing the exam. The process of delivering
exams needs to be re-examined rather than ditching a valuable tool. I
always tell my students that the purpose of the exam is to see as a teacher
what I need to reteach and help them with – the exam is for me as well as for
them to evaluate their own learning. Students need to be evaluated on
more than just the exam. It can be a tool but not the only form of
assessment. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Heading1Char"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Exams
are still relevant in life outside of school.</span></span></h4>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">
<!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "times new roman";">Why does education need one type of assessment? This
learning record or portfolio might work well for some learners and very well be
the preferred method of assessment. However, for those academics, the
exam is a tried and true means of learning and taking that learning to the next
level. Why throw away the exam when we could simply diversify the
options? The reality is exams are still a part of real life – we must
take driver’s exams and serving it right exams, we must memorize rules of the
road and rules in society. Exams have value in the bigger assessment
picture.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">
Let's not assign a grade every time! Make it a part of the student
portfolio!</span></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'times new roman'; font-weight: normal;">Which
brings me back to my own grade one classroom where I give a paper and pencil
assessment twice a year to help me write report cards. I have never thought to
review the correct answers with my students following the assessment. I will be
sure to do this in the future. However, I never assign a grade to these exams;
as I create report cards I peruse the exams, while I am perusing a collection
of other work each student has completed to give an overall picture of each
student’s learning. I am beginning to wonder if this paper and pencil
assessment is really part of a portfolio or an actual exam. What defines an
exam? Is it how an exam is designed, how it is delivered, or how it is used to assess?</span></h4>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">
Exams and tests do not have to involve writing or reading.</span></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'times new roman'; font-weight: normal;">With
technology an exam could easily be designed with questions that are
"read" to students by the computer and where students record their
answers verbally. Perhaps we just need to rethink the design of exams.
We need to make them less traditional and more current for today's 21st
century learners.</span></h4>

Prepping Your Child for Kindergarten! For Parents<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I'm not sure if I have told all of you bloggers but I am doing my Masters right now through Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington! Needless to say life is super busy but I love how active my mind is and how many new ideas I have learned about from my professors and colleagues!! LOVE it! Never thought I would like it this much!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So as part of my Curriculum Course was to create some curriculum. I chose to write a magazine for parents with children entering into Kindergarten. My hope was it would help prep their child for the transition! This is what I came up with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ready-Set-Learn-Magazine-for-Parents-with-Kids-Entering-School-2348352" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="472" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tKYSMpkHqUY/VqXLP4jFQYI/AAAAAAAAE8k/GIlnBKOHATo/s640/Curriculum%2BProject%2BPresentation.001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">I wrote this resource as I found no resource that was succinct and easy to read for the busy parent who is preparing their child for Kindergarten. In fact, I even went to the bookstore to see what was available in the area of parenting books and what I found was overwhelming!!</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ready-Set-Learn-Magazine-for-Parents-with-Kids-Entering-School-2348352" target="_blank"><img alt="Prep your child for school" border="0" height="472" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ms6CwFPnpg8/VqXLPdQmWSI/AAAAAAAAE8g/VNAfAJ-b8so/s640/Curriculum%2BProject%2BPresentation.002.jpg" title="Ready, Set, Learn Kindergarten Prep Magazine for Parents" width="640" /></a></div>
I discovered a vast amount of books - each one quite complex and way too long for the busy, tired parent to even get past the first few pages without losing focus and interest. Out of the ten random books I chose to survey, two appeared to have content with common sense and useful ideas. The rest, in my opinion, were highly technical and not at the reading level of the average parent. Thus, I decided to write a fun, short, magazine inspired resource for the busy, average parent to read. My audience of parents are focused on what I know - parents who send their children to my school - thus, and maybe unfortunately, it is geared towards middle to upper class professional, working class families.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy NovemBEAR:) It is almost report card season in my part of the world! I thought I would share a little Language Arts Assessment freebie. The first part assesses their reading and comprehension skills. The second part assesses their phonics and sounding out skills. The third part they must copy the sentence so it assesses their printing skills. Hope this is useful!</div>

Also for those of you teaching about religion I have a little make it yourself church that was student inspired. They found some of my scraps from a couple of projects and started cutting them out. Pretty soon they were creating their own churches so I thought why not make it into a class project! Voila!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I am teaching my students about where I would like them to place their letters when printing. I have always used the analogy of a house to help but I have never made any worksheets to match. Finally I made a few so here you go for free!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxRND2dG9SmRRnZybjFVb1p0NjQ/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="474" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dysWEysd1tg/VkFjAtjZqiI/AAAAAAAAE6E/qB4aIu2sQJ8/s640/Printing%2BHouses.001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I do a little quiz by pointing to each part of the house and having them call out the name of the part I am pointing to. After some practice they get used to talking about the upstairs, downstairs, basement, middle dotted line, top solid line, bottom solid line, etc. We go fast, we go slow - it is pretty fun.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxRND2dG9SmRRnZybjFVb1p0NjQ/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank"><img alt="primary practice printing" border="0" height="474" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qqgCL-9EXWk/VkFjAsL6hBI/AAAAAAAAE6A/-10fkRAD940/s640/Printing%2BHouses.002.jpg" title="Printing on the line" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then we sorted out the letters of the alphabet into their respective houses! Simple yet effective! Happy printing, eh!</div>
